Mark Coghill - Tailings management and repurposing

To meet customer grade and material handling requirements, mined ore is beneficiated, and concentrated. The resultant mineral processing residue stream, called tailings, is typically thickened prior to deposition into an engineered storage facility where it consolidates. The management of mineral processing tailings is changing in response to increasing metal demand, declining ore grades, critical material sourcing, and regulatory expectations.

The objective of this presentation is to:

(a) Provide an overview of mineral processing tailings, the management strategy employed by the industry and the drivers that are changing the way we manage tailings.

(b) Discuss a current project to identify and develop opportunities to reuse process residue streams as feed for commercial applications.
