Diana is a metallurgical engineer who has worked for over 40 years in mineral processing operations, engineering companies and R & D organisations. This broad experience has given her a good understanding of what mineral processing engineers need to be able to do. Combining this with formal and informal studies in education and learning design, she has become a recognised expert in early-career professional development for engineers, overseeing and delivering programs to learners in Australia, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe.
Diana is a director of Metcelerate Limited, and a principal at Mineralis Consultants. She chairs the Education Commission of the International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC), was a director on the board of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) from 2014 – 2020 and chaired the AusIMM Metallurgical Society from 2012 to 2015.
The mining and resources sector is now gaining recognition as profoundly significant, with numerous reports underscoring the need to avoid an impending skills shortage. Although this shift in perception is encouraging, it is apparent that the complexities of the mine-to-metal value chain are widely misunderstood. There seems to be a general belief that maximising the “critical minerals” opportunity entails little more than intensifying mining and exploration efforts.
As members of the mineral processing community, we know it’s a little more complicated than that. In this presentation I will be reporting on work done the International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC), and others, to identify the amount of value that can be won, or lost, in mineral separation and extraction processes, and the knowledge and skills required to achieve the best outcomes.
